Palm Sunday

Today, with Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion, we embark on the HOLIEST of weeks, the first and most important in our liturgical year.  Each day provides a renewed opportunity to celebrate the Passion, Death, life-giving Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion: This year we walk with the Lord during His final days, proclaiming the Passion according to Mathew.  Each of the Passion narratives has a different feel to it, as the evangelist emphasizes some subtle themes.  Walk with Jesus in His triumphal entry into Jerusalem as the adoring crowds wave palm branches and shout “Hosanna.”

Holy Thursday: This is the commemoration of the Last Supper, as the Lord instituted the Eucharist and the Priesthood.  We hear from John’s Gospel of the mandatum, the Lord’s command to “wash the feet” of the other, to “do this in memory of me.”

Good Friday: John’s Passion narrative dominates this celebration, as we venerate the Cross and receive Holy Communion.  This is the only day of the year when Mass is not celebrated.  The altar is stripped down to emphasize that the Lord has died and entered the tomb.

The Great Vigil of Easter: Holy Saturday brings the marvelous celebration of the Lord’s Resurrection.  The lighting of the Easter fire, the blessing of the Paschal Candle, the singing of the Exsultet, the proclamation of salvation history in Sacred Scripture, and the celebration of the Most Holy Eucharist mark this great day.

All masses will be broadcast via the live-stream internet on the Cathedral website at https://www.stfranciscathedral.org.
