Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion Qualified individuals selected by the pastor are appointed by the Bishop to serve as Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist. When requested by the pastor, Eucharistic ministers may distribute communion to other members of the faithful, to the sick or aged in their homes, nursing homes, hospitals or other institutions. Shawls may be made for those undergoing medical procedures; as a comfort after a loss or in times of stress; during bereavement; prayer or meditation; baptism; during an illness and recovery.
