The earliest Catholic presence recorded in the Pittstown area was a Mass celebrated in the summer of 1852 by Father Edward Brady. From 1884 until 1999, Catholics in the area worshipped as part of Immaculate Conception Parish in Clinton NJ.
Our Church
In 1990, the Diocese of Metuchen acquired property on Whitebridge Road anticipating a long-term population growth in the area. The following year, local residents John W. and Catherine Raymonds gifted the finances to construct a new church for the Catholic families in the area. Construction began on October 21, 1991 and the cornerstone was laid on April 29, 1992. The church was solemnly consecrated by Bishop Edward T. Hughes on October 13, 1992 under the patronage of St. Catherine of Siena.
Under the continued guidance of Pastor Chester Zalubski, the parish community continued to grow, and limited seating in the church building became an ongoing challenge. On June 25, 2017, a groundbreaking was held for a much-needed expansion and renovation of the original church building. The expansion would increase seating capacity from 96 to 307, adding 3,500 square feet to the original 2,130 square feet. The expansion was made possible by the commitment and time of many talented parishioners. Under the Steering Committee were the Campaign; Communications; Design & Construction; Finance; and Legal & Liturgical Design committees. More than 50 percent of parishioners made financial pledges. The first Mass was held on Holy Thursday, April 18, 2019, followed by the Dedication on April 28, 2019, presided by Bishop James F. Checchio.
Our Parish
On September 25, 1992, St. Catherine of Siena Parish was established as a mission church of Immaculate Conception Parish in Clinton by Bishop Edward T. Hughes. The parish includes a major part of Franklin Township as well as substantial sections of Alexandria and Union Townships. As the community and membership grew, Bishop Vincent DePaul Breen established St. Catherine of Siena as an independent parish in June 1999, and installed Rev. Peter G. Suhaka as the first resident pastor. In the Spring of 2011, Fr. Chester Zalubski, SBD, was welcomed as Parish administrator and was later installed as Pastor in April 2012, at the 20th anniversary celebration of the church.
Parish Center
To meet the needs of our growing community, the parish purchased a building on Perryville Road in Hampton NJ in August of 2008 to serve as Parish Center and supplemental worship space. The first Mass was held at the center during the weekend of September 18 and 19, 2010. The parish community gathered together for a Mass of thanksgiving and celebration on Sunday October 31, 2010 at which time Bishop Paul G. Bootkoski blessed both the altar and the parish center. Bishop Bootkoski recognized the many gifts of stewardship and the dedication of St. Catherine’s parishioners which made the new center a reality. The parish center continued to remain in constant use until it was sold in 2019.
In 2023, plans were initiated to erect a new Parish Center building on the church property to accommodate much-needed classrooms for catechism, as well as meeting space.
